kaida miyata and stephen davis had a fairly cliche romance. a military man, stephen was stationed in japan when he met kaida and instantly fell in love. kaida was a little more grounded and was at first not impressed with the attention she was receiving from this man. her family was quite traditional and didn't exactly approve of their beautiful intelligent daughter getting involved with an american military officer. kaida had no intention of getting involved with stephen but gradually a friendship blossomed. kaida and stephen's mutual interest in literature helped build a foundation that their romantic relationship rested upon.
once stephen was moved from his base in japan to one in germany, kaida announced she was pregnant. a shotgun wedding followed and they both moved to chicago to be close to stephen's family. unfortunately, their relationship fell apart and although divorce was never mentioned or ever happened, their relationship ended only weeks after aimi was born. stephen was deployed and kaida moved out of her in-laws home and set out to raise her daughter right.
aimi grew up with a mother who was tough as nails and it made a huge impact on her. not only did she end up in a country that was completely foreign to her, she was left to raise her child as a single mom. but never did she let that affect her love for her daughter. aimi was raised to speak her mind and never let anyone push her around. although kaida could be tough at times, particularly when it came to grades, she only wanted the best for aimi and aimi never doubted that. she grew up to be very close to her mother and continues to be fiercely protective of her mother.
a problem child from the very beginning, aimi grew up with no sense of respect for authority figures. her theory was that if someone wanted her to respect them they had to prove themselves. that meant that she was constantly getting in trouble at school. a nightmare for teachers as she was constantly asking why or getting the other kids riled up for a mutiny, but kaida was just proud of her daughter for not following blindly. it was something that aimi never grew out of.
in high school aimi really discovered her love of art and drawing. she started making comics of her and her friends and gradually word got around school about her skills. eventually she moved on from pencil and paper to her computer and taught herself graphic design. her mother encouraged her to enter her work in a contest for aspiring graphic designers and she won, which solidified her career path. she graduated from high school and went to the school of the art institute of chicago but dropped out after a year when she decided that it just wasn't for her. instead she chose to freelance, which wasn't the steady employment her mother was hoping for but aimi knew she had to do what she wanted or hate herself for slaving away to the man.
